ipad 2 VS xooms (HTML5 tablet comparison)

without comments

Sencha, He currently used the Motorola Xoom to determine exactly how its browser compatibility compares for HTML5/CSS3 web developers, has took its face to face an ipad 2 to see how its browser compares inside the HTML5/CSS3/Javascript field.

(Sencha, as a reminder, provides open-source web application frameworks and tools to primary Enterprises and independent developers – such as Best Buy, Dell, Salesforce.com and Adobe.)

To the iPad, to be able to deal well with HTML5 and CSS3 (inside them for hours good Javascript) is important because – as basically everybody in the technology field knows – it doesn’t do Flash (and you may read Steve Jobs’s reasoning if you need a reminder why; is in reality interesting to revisit what he was quoted saying then, in April 2010, to determine whether any of the points there’ve changed).

How does the dual-core A5 chip in the just-released (but challenging) ipad 2 running iOS match up against Motorola’s dual-core Tegra 2 chip in the just-released Xoom running Android 3.0?

Based on Sencha, the ipad 2 is better than the Xoom handily in just about all of the speed tests that they ran; intriguingly, based on Sencha’s tests, the initial iPad beats the Samsung Galaxy Tab on each and every performance test around the WebKit browser (which they have in accordance); it even matches the Xoom on a couple.

Just as interesting is the place where the ipad 2 performs up against the Xoom, since it is exactly what developers who are attempting to produce HTML5 products down the road would want to know.

Based on Aditya Bansod, who also performed the testing for the Xoom, the ipad 2 scores 100/100 on the Acid3 test, although like with the Xoom you can find small rendering issues, for instance wrongly-coloured squares every now and then.

Next, browser features, investigated via a product called Modernizr:

”Modernizr found support for SVG, CSS 2D transforms, CSS 3D transforms, CSS transitions, WebGL and Web Sockets. Interestingly enough, Modernizer reported there wasn’t any Inline SVG although we were in a position to get a few demo sites and saw that it did in reality work, looked after reported that this browser supports WebGL, which we couldn’t make a start. Once we present in our earlier scorecards, want . browser says something will there be, for many people it truely does work. All the other HTML5 features except the ones mentioned worked beautifully.”

ipad 2 / Xoom / Galaxy Tab /iPad Javacript Apple iPad 1 and a pair of, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy Tab browser benchmarks. Source: Sencha.

It’s the performance testing in the browser that shows the large improvements within the ipad 2; pretty much everything for the browser front is doubled when compared to the first-generation machine. There are six demos that you can test out your favourite HTML5-compatibie browser on (contact us how IE9 copes); Bansod says that “Without any doubt, the iPad’s Mobile Safari browser has got the best CSS3 support from a mobile browser we’ve seen.”

Another interesting point is embedded HTML5 car stereo:

”Again, the ipad 2 nails it. Audio plays back quickly and permits you to stop and resume. Video happens quickly and streams without issue inside the browser page. The iPad 2′s media support is solid.”

But that might be moot: Apple looks unlikely to choose Google’s WebM codec, which Google appears to be pushing increasingly hard over H.264 (which Apple decodes in HTML5). The jury’s still on whether H.264 in mobile HTML5 will slip a gap between Flash for the desktop and WebM on Google properties.

One question that comes from the benchmarking: given that Google Chrome is unquestionably an easy browser, also it’s according to WebKit, each and every WebKit perform comparatively slowly on Android? Is it an inadequate Javascript implementation, or another type?
